Derthona Due.Zero: the preview of Timorasso 2022.

The fourth edition of Derthona Due.Zero will take place next weekend at the Orsi Museum in Tortona, to presents the preview of the Colli Tortonesi DOC white wines obtained from the Timorasso grape to wine lovers and wine business practitioners.

That of Timorasso is a story of rebirth, since it is a vine that had almost disappeared at the end of the 1980s and in 2009 the vineyards only covered 25 hectares. The recovery of this vine was achieved thanks to the commitment of a group of young winemakers, among whom the three pioneers must certainly be remembered: Walter Massa, Andrea Mutti and Paolo Poggio.

Pioneers who clearly had it right considering that today the Timorasso vineyard has reached almost 400 hectares for 108 wineries associated with the Consorzio Tutela Vini Colli Tortonesi producing it.

Timorasso has thus become, or it would be better to say re-become, one of the emblematic wines of this territory at the crossroads between Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria and Emilia, also thanks to its ability to give rise to wines with rare aging capabilities in the case of white wines.

It is no coincidence that Derthona Due.Zero will be presented in the 2022 vintage, because the 2023 is still being refined in the cellar, as required by the Consortium specifications. Above all, the longevity of Timorasso will be appreciated in the two masterclasses that will be held at 4pm on both Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 April, as underlined by Gian Paolo Repetto, President of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Colli Tortonesi:

Timorasso has now become the flagship wine of our territory. We are particularly proud of this: that of Timorasso is in fact a story of rebirth which highlights the great strength of our country’s indigenous heritage and the excellence of a variety capable of giving rise to identifying wines, representative of our hills and with an evolutionary potential that, for white wines, has few equals in Italy“.

The identity arises first of all from the pedo-climatic conditions of the hills that descend from the Ossona, Grue, Curone, Scrivia, Borbera and Spinti valleys, characterized by clayey and compact soils, in which blue marl prevails.

The management techniques of the vineyard and the cellar also contribute to the structure of Timorasso, with the low yields of grapes/hectare and grapes in wine foreseen by the Consortium specifications: respectively 8 tons/ha and yield of 65% at pressing.

The work concludes with the minimum aging of 10 months for the Timorasso DOC and 21 months for the Timorasso Riserva DOC.

Among the novelties of the 2024 edition of Derthona Due.Zero is the presence at the tasting tables of representatives of the Ovada DOCG Protection Consortium, the Gavi Protection Consortium and the Colline del Monferrato Casalese Consortium. A co-opetitive vision that aims to also enhance the other excellences of the province of Alessandria.

The success of Timorasso, however, is going beyond national borders and so among the estates present in the spaces of the Orsi Museum you will also find the Ukrainian estate Beykush, where winemaker Bisso Atanassov produces Timorasso on the shores of the Black Sea.

The program also includes three conferences on the aromatic precursors of Timorasso, on sensorial analysis linked to aging and on the management of innovation for a traditional sector such as wine production in general and Timorasso in particular. All information on the programme, timetables and tickets can be found on the Consorzio Tutela Vini Colli Tortonesi website .
