Pinot Grigio has been the backbone of the wine sector in northeastern Italy for decades.
As Luis Durnwalter, President of the Province of Bolzano, once said, the success of Pinot Grigio has provided economic stability that has allowed us to dedicate ourselves to the development of wine companies, including other wines.
Far from being a passing fad, this backbone is being strengthened thanks to the work of the Consorzio DOC delle Venezie, which manages and coordinates a large and varied reality that extends from the Province of Trento to that of Trieste.
Three regions, Trentino – Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli – Venezia Giulia, 27 thousand hectares of vineyards (the largest DOC in Italy), 6,141 winemakers, 575 winemaking cellars and 371 bottling cellars produce 230 million bottles every year, 95% of which are sold abroad.
This is 85% of all Pinot Grigio produced in Italy and 43% of that produced worldwide.
Every year in autumn the Consortium organizes a forum to take stock of the situation. This year it will be held in Udine, Saturday 26 October at 10:00, at the Castello di Udine where future scenarios from the point of view of legislation and the market will be discussed.
After the greetings of the Authorities, the work will open with the first round table entitled “Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie in the evolution of the political and regulatory wine context”, which will analyze the priorities of the Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie supply chain within the European regulatory framework that characterizes the wine sector, currently inserted in a scenario of profound change. Among the topics, the recent reform of geographical indications, which has introduced new tools useful for strengthening the market and a renewed role for protection Consortia, and the progress of work within the high-level group on wine policies recently established by the EU Commissioner for Agriculture that will allow a strategy to be drawn up by 2025 that will have an impact on future sector policies.
A technical and political analysis that will see the contribution of representatives from the world of institutions, organizations and research such as Paolo De Castro (rapporteur of the European Parliament for the GI reform), Riccardo Ricci Curbastro (EFOW European Federation of Origin Wines), Luca Rigotti (Gruppo Vino Copa Cogeca), Antonella Rossetti (Wine Institute FarmEurope), Diego Saluzzo (UGIVI – Union of Jurists of Vine and Wine) and Michele Morgante (Institute of Applied Genomics, University of Udine).
The market players will instead meet in the second debate, entitled “Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie and the wine market in large-scale distribution”, to delve into the position of DOC Delle Venezie within large-scale distribution, the main distribution channel.
We are faced with a changing scenario regarding consumption habits and the balance between sales channels and, in this context and with the aim of strengthening the internal market, it becomes essential to share reflections and indicators to analyze, starting from the current market situation, the challenges and opportunities, as well as the ability to adapt and the potential repercussions that new trends may have on the Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie supply chain, with the aim of responding effectively to the needs of demand and the renewed dynamics that guide purchasing choices.
To discuss the current situation and especially the future scenarios and prospects, there will be speakers from organizations specialized in market research, dynamics of modern distribution and mediation such as Tiziana Sarnari (ISMEA – Institute of Services for the Agricultural Food Market), Patric Lorenzon (Med.&A. – National Association of Business Agents in Mediation and Commercial Agents) and Vittorio Cino (Centromarca – Italian Association of Brand Industry), as well as important entities that are part of the Pinot Grigio DOC Delle Venezie supply chain – represented here by Alessandro Mutinelli of Italian Wine Brands S.p.A., Silvano Nicolato of Vitevis and Pierluigi Guarise of Collis Veneto Wine Group – as well as large-scale distribution, with the presence of Eleanna Pizzinelli and Alessandro Cassanelli, respectively responsible for beverages and wine buyers of Coop Italia.
