Malvasia is an ancient vine that has spread throughout the Mediterranean over the centuries, so much so that it is considered native in certain areas such as Friuli Venezia Giulia and nearby Istria. Malvasia Istriana, belonging to the large Malvasia family, is a semi-aromatic variety that produces wines with a unique and fascinating character.
Malvasia Istriana produces dry, structured, savoury and mineral wines, with aromas ranging from white flowers and citrus fruits to hints of aromatic herbs and dried fruit. It is a vine that is mainly used for the production of still white wines, but in some areas of Friuli and Istria and especially on the Carso, the macerated version is produced.
The term “Orange Wine”, or macerated wine, refers to a type of white wine produced with a winemaking method similar to that used for red wines. This means that the skins of the white grapes are left to macerate in the must for the entire period of alcoholic fermentation: a much longer period of time than the traditional vinification of white wines.
Today, to delve deeper into the charm of this grape variety, we will delve into the heart of the Zidarich winery which, with its artisanal production philosophy and its deep knowledge of the territory, manages to capture the essence of Malvasia.
Their Malvasia or rather Malvazija 2021 is an authentic expression of the territory, considered an iconic white of the Karst. The grapes are carefully selected and fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in open vats and then the must is aged for 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels.
Golden in color, it releases a bouquet of warm and intense aromas on the nose: juicy yellow-fleshed fruit, Mediterranean scrub, a touch of honey, dried citrus fruits and barley candy.
In the mouth it demonstrates substance and character with a pleasantly fresh-savoury taste. The body is full and soft, with a harmonious and persistent structure. The finish is long and pleasant with mineral hints.
Malvasia Istriana, especially the Zidarich version, is a versatile wine suitable for different occasions. It can accompany baked fish dishes such as sea bass and sea bream, but also vegetarian dishes, such as risotto with seasonal vegetables and omelettes with aromatic herbs.
Let’s not forget the pairing with medium-aged cheeses and goat cheeses accompanied with different types of honey and apricot or citrus mustards.
Malvasia Istriana, with its unique character and versatility, is a wine that deserves to be discovered and tasted. A sensory journey that leads us to the discovery of a territory rich in tradition and passion, like that of the Zidarich company, which with its Malvazija 2021 gives us an authentic and unforgettable experience.
